Port Chalmers is just 15 minutes from Dunedin by road on the West Harbour. See below for a variety of transport options.

By bus

Buses from Dunedin to Port Chalmers depart once or twice each hour from Bus Hub Stop B on Great King Street, Dunedin Central. Visit the Otago Regional Council website for more information and timetables.

By car

State Highway 88 connects Port Chalmers to Dunedin. Allow fifteen minutes to follow the road past the Forsyth Barr Stadium, through the suburb of Ravensbourne and around curved causeways to the Port. There is also a narrow, winding but scenic and enjoyable route from Blueskin Bay.

By bike

Port Chalmers is connected to Dunedin by the new West Harbour Te Ara Moana shared cycle path. This path is a significant portion of Te Aka Ōtākou (The Otago Vine), a scenic cycle path that leads from Port Chalmers via the city and all the way to Portobello on the Otago Peninsula. You can book a ferry and take your bike across, connecting the loop (see below for ferry options).

By boat

We are lucky to have two ferry services that stop at Port Chalmers, with trips available via the Otago Peninsula, Quarantine Island and Carey’s Bay. Visit Port to Port Wildlife Cruises or Otago Water Taxis for more information.

By cruise

Cruise Ships are back in Port Chalmers. View the cruise ship timetable on the Port Otago website.
